During the spring and early summer, Staffan Berg, Vahid Forooqi Motlaq, Ann-Sofie Persson, Maryam Tofiq and numerous other junior researchers at SweDeliver are publishing results that add valuable knowledge to the fields of drug delivery.

In the article Impact of Intestinal Concentration and Colloidal Structure on the Permeation-Enhancing Efficiency of Sodium Caprate in the Rat, Staffan Berg, PhD student in SweDeliver's Work package Oral Drug Delivery, analyses how the permeation enhancer sodium caprate (C10) influences the intestinal absorption of macromolecules.

The findings, suggesting that in order to optimally enhance the absorption of macromolecules, high (≥100 mM) initial intestinal C10 concentrations are likely needed and that both the concentration and total dose of C10 are important parameters, are published in Molecular Pharmaceutics, vol. 19, 2022.


Vahid Forooqi Motlaq, PhD student at the Department of Medicinal Chemistry, has published the article Dissolution mechanism of supported phospholipid bilayers in the presence of amphiphilic drug investigated by neutron reflectometry and quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring in the journal Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Biomemanes, 2022.

In his study, Vahid Forooqi Motlaq demonstrates the strength of the combination of Quartz Crystal Microbalance with Dissipation Monitoring and Neutron reflectometry techniques, and also provides new insights the processes of membrane penetration, which is, relevant when studying the therapeutic effect of AMT sodium (and potassium) channel blockage, and ultimate dissolution of phospholipids by amphiphilic drugs.


In the article Tabletability and compactibility of α-lactose monohydrate powders of different particle size. I. Experimental comparison, Ann-Sofie Persson derives and compares two types of parameters representing tabletability and compactibility profiles of a series of α-lactose monohydrate powders, ranging in particle size from approximately 3.5 to 203 µm.

The results indicate that compactibility and tabletability parameters collectively provide a concentrated description of the compaction properties of a powder. The article is published in the journal Pharmaceutical Development and Technology.


In a new study, Maryam Tofiq examines the effect of a systematically varied excipient ratio of a plastic (microcrystalline cellulose) and a brittle (crystalline α-lactose monohydrate) material on the compression properties of dry granulated particles.

In the article, published in the journal Powder Technology, vol. 399, 2022, Maryam Tofiq concludes that the composition, microstructure, and packing density of the granules dictated compression properties, while the granule size and work hardening of primary particles were insignificant.
